It's been a little over a year since we bought our new to us 100 year old farmhouse. I've just recently started working on an attic room that will eventually become my new studio and I thought I'd share the journey with all of you. Here is the room. Note the yucky 1980's carpet and the dated wallpaper from the same era. There is so much work to be done on other parts of the house that very little has been done to this room, but that is about to change. I'm really missing having a space of my own to create. Dawn

Although, very little has been done to the room because there is so much to be done in other parts of the house, one of the first things we did when we took possession of the house was to remove the carpet. Look what we found underneath the carpet - hardwood floors that have been painted gray! Stay tuned... Dawn

Thanks, Cat! You're right, it is a cute little room. It's not quite as big as the studio at the old house, but I'm looking at it as a good opportunity to get rid of some of the junk I'd accumulated over the years. I definitely have stuff I do not need and this smaller space is going to help me downsize a bit. The next few photos (and those posted above) will be from the time we bought the house to when we moved in just to get us all caught up. After I get those posted, I'll start with where we are now which is having just finished painting the walls and ceiling. More coming after I re-size a few pics! Dawn

Oh, that is a cute space! I love it. I have never understood why anyone would paint over hardwood floors. 😳🤔

Thank you, Michelle! I don't get it about the floors either. Besides the fact that it's painted, the paint is all scratched and scuffed up from people walking on it. My plan is to use paint stripper to remove as much paint as I can and then put a couple of coats of varnish down. If it looks the way it looks in my head, it will have a few streaks of paint with mostly wood showing through and I'll call it a distressed floor. As a side note, the light fixture in that room was much too elaborate for the space. It's a beautiful cut glass fixture, although I could do without the little foo-foo thing at the top, and we've moved it to our dining room where it fits perfectly. We figure it was put in there sometime in the late 70's - early 80's which would make it between 40 - 50 years old. Not yet an antique, but definitely vintage! I will try to post more studio photos later today. At the moment, I am getting ready to make sauce for tamales as well as a batch of Mexican carrot pickles. While I do that, hubby is smoking a pork roast for the tamale filling. Dawn

The light fixture is perfect for a dining room. Sometimes you have to wonder about what people do to their houses. I mean, why would you paint hardwood floors? But whatever floats the boat, I guess.
That room will make a great studio.

I'm back to this long neglected thread! We became completely involved in the bathroom remodel not long after I started this thread and the studio project was set aside. Now that the bathroom is finished, I'm back at work on the studio. Thank you all for the sweet comments about the room and the light fixture. I'm with all of you about not understanding why people would paint hardwood floors. But, yea...boats and all. So, when we left this thread, I had finished ripping up the old carpet and was preparing to paint. First, I had to move all of the boxes and other things out. They landed in our bedroom where they remain to this day, although it's all a bit more organized now than what these photos show. Painting day arrived and I was excited! I chose a pretty gray blue for the walls, but while I loved the paint sample card, once it was on the walls I didn't like it at all. I thought it would grow on me, but the more I looked at it, the less I liked it. Since I had spent $100 on paint, I figured I was going to have to live with it. Ugh! Dawn

It occurred to me that perhaps the reason I didn't like the blue color was because it was too soft and pastel. After all, the studio in our old house was blue and I loved it. But, it was a bright, robin's egg blue, not an Easter blue. Maybe a bright color on the window trim would help? Back to the hardware store for more paint! I chose this deep orange/red. It reminds me of red curry sauce. I put one coat of paint on the window trim...WOW, that's a bright color! Hmmmmm...I kinda like the orange, but I don't think it's working with the blue. What to do, what to do... Dawn

Our Las Vegas condo was painted turquoise with a tangerine orange trim. I loved it. I can’t tell how your curry red is playing with the blue. But it has possibilities in my mind.

I like the soft blue, the bright orange is a bit too much for my liking, but that's just personal taste. How they go together is hard to imagine for me at the moment. (You know I even struggled with the color combo here on the forum )

Michelle, I can totally picture your turquoise and tangerine trim and it sounds lovely. I'll bet it was such a cheerful and energizing space. I hear ya about the orange, Cat. I'm going to stick with it for now and put a second coat on the trim. I already have the paint and nothing to lose but time. If I end up not liking it, changing the color won't be that big a deal. Tomorrow, I will share pics of the direction I'm now going with this project... Dawn

I am for what Cat said about the blue. Perhaps the Orange improves it. It is really a matter of taste. Personally I prefer walls with delicate pastel colors, even plain white, on which I can hang paintings and things from flea markets, which add warmth to my surroundings without colliding with the wall colors.
Your new studio looks bright and spacious. It is wonderful you have such a room. I am waiting to see what you will create when you go back to creating new ideas.
Mine is a rather small room but I decorated it with a large antique mirror which I brought from my Ein Carmel studio and I hung on the wall opposite the window, so it contributes to an illusion of a larger room. Actually it is my most favorite place at home, where I can concentrate while making my stuff.
