This might be a stretch on this Topic, but as a part of my summer away from the Forum, I made a patio. I took a trouble area of the back yard, that was just covered in aging mulch & weeds, and built a patio. Removed the mulch, excavated several inches of clay dirt, laid weed fabric, added a layer of fine crushed base rock, then added 2+ inches of pullet grit/crushed oyster shell. We have always wanted a walk or small patio of crushed oyster shell. Attached are the before and after pics. (Next year rebuild yard and dress up brick walk) Brad

Wow, what a transformation! The new patio is such an inviting place, I can imagine sitting out there with a cool drink in hand enjoying the breeze and birdsong. Terrific job and also sounds like a lot of work - who needs a gym? We have a similar problem area in our front yard - every spring/summer it turns into a weed patch with a few bushes for good measure. I have grown tired to spending much of my time pulling weeds so next year we are going to put down stone pavers and make a nice patio space out there. Dawn

"sounds like a lot of work - who needs a gym?" I almost gave my chiropractor a call, went with pills instead. I am a bit to old to have done that much digging, then hauling and dumping about 75 50# bags of gravel and oyster shell.
"we are going to put down stone pavers". That is my spring project, hopefully. Take an ugly area against the back of the house, and do some kind of paver patio/eye candy space there. (minimize the grass space and the watering-and weed pulling) I already dug up a mature spirea bush in that area and transplanted it to the back of the yard, out of the way-for now. Now that was not fun, indeed!
Thank you, for the kind comments. brad

Don't work as hard on the next patio, Brad! Can't wait, Cat. I'll make Long Island Ice Teas to sip on! Dawn

Brad, I’ve been so distracted with my mom’s health issues, I totally missed this. Amazing! The transformation looks fantastic. I hope your back has recovered by now.

Thank you, all. Next spring we will fill the window box with flowers. I was think of having a poster made of a life-size portion of a bugatti, and hang it on the inside of the window. ;-) brad
