Recently I did some soldering on 1/8" thick silver. Quite the chore, getting the heat through such a thick piece. Now I want to solder the 1/4" square wings onto the 1/4" square vertical piece for a large pendent cross. Not so confident on this project. I have a big jeweler's torch with smaller to bigger attachments. So I can generate a lot of heat. I am worried the flame side of the silver might start melting before I ever get enough heat to the solder on the other side? Brad

Sounds like an interesting project, Brad. I am totally out of my element though as far as any advice.

Since I'm a soldering newbie, I'm afraid I'm not much help. My only suggestion would be to try it on a scrap before attempting the actual piece. Maybe Irith will come by and give her thoughts and advice. Dawn

advice I have received elsewhere, is to sweat solder. First, melt solder on the end of smaller (wings) piece, then solder to the longer piece. I am just not sure if the advice will hold with 1/4" thick square pieces. I have not tried it on the copper pieces, I also have - yet. I hope to later this week? Brad

It is not easy to solder on thick silver. Depends upon the thickness. ( 1/8 inch = 3.175 mm) sounds rather thick to me. Attached is a relevant link to how to solder a thinner piece of silver to a thick one. www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6tdvFdaNaU

I sweat soldered one piece of 1/4" copper to another 1/4" piece, to see how it went. I learned make sure the solder covers the entire face of the "sweat". The heat transferred through the thick metal no problem. Now, I have to decide how to solder the second wing on to a cross without loosing the first soldered joint, and how to position the piece after I do the first solder. Try doing both solders at the same time, and maybe lightly clamping both wings on before soldering? I have been distracted by a lot of spring planting in the yard, and making a large batch of the hitched webbing and leather bracelets, for a possible future show, along with silver and copper pieces.
