I think they are wasting their time, but good luck to them. I don't know how accurate the figure is, but according to a couple of articles I found on the internet, Etsy has more than 4 million sellers, so I doubt that 20,000 shops going on strike is going to make much of an impression on Etsy management. I have no interest in trying to build my own website, nor do I have much interest in marketing myself, so Etsy's model works for my needs. The fee increase doesn't really bother me. When I was consigning, I was paying 50 - 70% commissions to the shops/galleries that featured my work. To me, Etsy is a bargain. Now, the price of gas is another story! Dawn

From a statement made by Etsy I think you are absolutely right. Even if I don't have a shop anymore, this just confirms that leaving Etsy was the right decision for me personally.
From what I've heard there will probably be another seller exodus, but Etsy definitely doesn't care.

Cat, can you share the Etsy statement? I'm curious to see their spin on the situation. Yes, every time Etsy makes an unpopular change/decision, there is the mass exodus. I wonder how many of those who leave eventually find their way back. Cat, I'm glad your decision to leave Etsy has turned out to be the right thing for you. I felt the same way when I left Artfire. Maybe someday a selling venue for handmade goods will open up that works out for all of us. My dream site would allow no re-sellers, require that all products were hand crafted, have no iffy definitions about what is hand made (like putting a charm on a factory made chain wouldn't cut it), put a stop to all copyright violations, have a fair fee structure for sellers, a killer search engine and top notch customer service for their sellers...oh, and contact info like a working phone number and email. A girl can hope, I guess. Dawn

Dawn So how do you sell on your own blog?

It depends what kind of blog you have. There are blogs you can add a shopping cart to, for example. I think most people nowadays have a website with a shop and an additional blog, though, from what I see.

I've never tried to sell anything on my long neglected blog. If I post something there and someone happens along and sees it, they can contact me, but I'm not holding my breath that will ever happen. Sure would be a nice surprise if it did though! Dawn

As the only place I sell is on Etsy, I suppose I will not be one of those who make an exit. I still believe Etsy is the best place to show your handmade stuff and try to sell it.
I also have a shop on Shopify, but I hardly enter it. I keep it just in case Etsy decides to close my shop without previous warning, as they have done to quite a few people I know.

As I was visiting with several friendly dealers in Santa Fe, I was surprised to hear that many retailers there were taking 70% for consigned jewelry, etc. Although the prices asked in most of those shops were very very high. So perhaps 30% of pieces there might be similar to show prices in Kansas? (Except for the pricing at the Plaza Art Show in KC)
I may activate a new shop on Etsy, instead of my ancient "triangle" selling shop. Just for the fun of it. There is just so much stuff on there. Its like the best you might be is a tan grain of sand on a beach, instead of the light prevailing light tan or buff colored sand grains.
I guess I should take a look at Etsy's current rates. Brad

Brad, I used to consign quite a bit and did very well, but the shops and galleries commission was in the 60% range. The best arrangement I had was a 50/50 split. While it was nice to get my work seen in their shops, that is a hefty bit of change to give up. Etsy has a lot of issues and they irritate me quite often, but at this time there just really aren't any alternatives out there for little guys like us especially if one is like me and not interested in doing a lot of self promotion and marketing. I don't want to spend my time doing that. While not a huge volume seller over at Etsy, I manage to sell enough to pay for my beads, wire, tools and supplies. Works for me, I'm not trying to make a living selling jewelry. FB selling groups are also another option. No commissions there, at least not yet. Dawn
