Thanks for the link, Cat. I am usually annoyed with Etsy and rarely go to the forums or even the site itself anymore. Pretty much the only time I visit my shop is when I need to add a new listing or renew existing listings.
I read the story/petition, but I'm going to have to read it again as I'm not sure what the petition organizers are trying to accomplish. Regardless, I doubt anything they do is going to change the way Etsy management runs the company.
I think they want better support. I have heard several times that Etsy hasn't released payments and seem to be more concerned about buyers than their own sellers. Nothing wrong about being there for the customer, but Etsy seems to forget that their sellers are their own customers. Every time I see the Etsy commercial on TV, it makes me mad. It says something like you can get everything on Etsy and they show different people, but fail to mention that they are just the marketplace and that it's all different sellers.
Lack of support from Etsy to their sellers isn't anything new. They've been that way as long as I've been selling on their platform. It's pretty much do it their way or get out. For every seller that leaves, there are 10 sellers to take their place. Every time, they make an unpopular change, people get all riled up, say they are leaving, going to start their own site, etc. I'm not sure how many actually follow through with actually leaving, but I don't imagine that Etsy cares one way or the other.
Until someone comes along to really challenge them, I just don't see anything changing. Artfire tried, Zibbet tried and others have tried, but so far none of those challengers has been very successful. I'm not sure what the status of Amazon's homemade marketplace is, but I don't think they hurt Etsy either. Ebay is a different business model, so they aren't a threat either.
I'd love to find another selling platform as I have no love for Etsy, but there just isn't anything out there at this time.
I agree with you about the commercials. They do make it seem like Etsy is where to buy all these goods and that's what most buyers believe too. Ask someone where they bought some cool handmade product and they'll respond that they bought it from Etsy, not from Jewelry Art by Dawn. Very frustrating.
I do wish them luck with their petition, but I think what they are doing is like trying to bail out a sinking boat with a thimble.
