Due on April 15th, the topic for the new blog carnival will be "TECHNIQUE FAILS". We all know them, techniques that we simply can't or don't want to pursue any longer, either because we suck at them or because they are boring or maybe even outgrew them over the years. I'm sure there are more reasons. Technique "fails" is probably not the right word because the only failure is that we ban them from our lives Also they have their place in our work because they may have helped to let us grow as artisans. And sometimes they were probably just a pain in the butt. Let's talk about them.

Cool idea, Cat! Did you mean they are due March 15th or April 15th? š

Morning! This is a fun topic. Not afraid to show these, as I talk about all my epic fails on my blog anyway! Lol! So, the heart was my attempt to make a copper heart brooch. I'd been wanting to make my jewellery less "flat" and I'd just bought a doming kit... so gung-ho me decided it would be a great idea to make lots of tiny silver domes and then solder them to the front... I think the idea was there, but the execution terrible! The next one is an attempt at etching a silver ring. I had no idea what I was doing, but had an idea to etch Chinese characters onto a ring... I should have started bigger, as I found it very difficult to try and paint on the black out varnish by hand. By the time I got to this version, I think I was trying to use carbon copy paper to try and imprint the pattern. Lol! One to go back to! I've been obsessed with making my own chains, as I figure it will give me lots of practice with controlling pliers and getting things uniform. This was my attempt 10 years ago... I was trying to make Spanish chain (I think that was the term), just so I had a more interesting chain than hand made jump rings. It was difficult, it was fiddly... I gave up after these 5 links. I found the box of them the other day... so another one to try again! Best Wishes, Sami x

Sami, I like the idea for the little heart. Will you try again eventually? I'm not good at taking WIP pictures and would have to see if I have pictures of projects before I have ripped them up, but I'm probably too lazy for that. I thought about writing about a technique that I kind of outgrew because I think I know where those pictures are. Do you have a blog post about yours, Sami, that we could link to? We do this as a (small, mind you ) blog carnival linking to the other participants' posts. I will probably post mine sometime on the weekend, not the 15th because I already have the new Oldies challenge scheduled for that day.

I will probably post mine sometime on the weekend, not the 15th because I already have the new Oldies challenge scheduled for that day. I think I will redo the heart eventually... I still like the idea of soldering on the little domes onto the heart, but I think I need better execution (not going to be a cliche and blame my tools!) I'm still on a bit of a jewellery making buzz... more ideas than time at the moment! Lol! I've got a Russian wedding band on the go, and need to finish a chain for a wire wrapped pendant... Then there are 2 jewellery challenges I want to take part in, which finish at the end of April and it's already the 15th! On top of that a new jewellery programme started in the UK called "All That Glitters", did anyone in the UK catch it? I don't think licensing allows you to watch it outside the UK, unfortunately, but I've seen some clips on YouTube. My husband thinks it'll be a great idea if I try to do one of the programme's challenges every week... this week, I've got to make 3 complementary bangles... Theoretically in silver and in a timeframe of 3 hours, but that's not going to happen! I know what you mean about the WIP pictures. It's hard to remember to take them. I've started videoing my makes, so I can go back through the footage later and extract a still shot of my mess-ups. I do have a blog - it's www.silverjewellerygirl.com and a lot of my posts are about the mistakes or the trial and error learning that I've done. I don't have one about the heart, unfortunately - it came right when I was winding down to give birth to my daughter. But my etching post does cover the experimenting I did with the different inks and trying to get it on the metal, lol. Here's the link, in case useful: silverjewellerygirl.com/sterling-silver-etching-1st-attempt/. Thank you for offering to share my link Ok this post was far longer than I intended...! Sorry!

I love that little heart, Sami! I hope you keep your early works; it's always kind of mind blowing to go back and look at my early work and then at the stuff I'm making today. But, those first pieces have their own special charm mistakes and all. Ladies, I am going to be late with my post, but I will get it done. We've been doing nothing but painting walls and ceilings the last week or so and I just don't have time for anything else right now. Dawn

I have seen the preview for "All That Glitters" and thought what a pity it is that we can't watch it here. I also would have liked to seen the one about pottery! It's great that you want to go along with the challenges, Sami, will you share the results with us?
I just scheduled my blog post for Sunday. The internet made it take me much longer than I had patience for it, so I'm not sure if there are typos or terrible grammar mistakes. I almost bit into my desk!

Yay for getting yours done, Cat! Iām shooting for next week. (And feeling like the kid who waited until the night before the assignment was due to even start.)

What always makes it even harder for me is that I have to write it and then translate it for my German blog as well. It's usually connected with some whining

Oh right, Cat! Yikes! But I really admire your fluency in more than one language.

Dawn Hi Dawn, Yes, I have mostly all of my work, apart from the ones that I made as gifts. My drawer is getting a bit full though, I might have to think of something to do with the pieces I like the least! Sami x

Hi Cat, It's such a shame, but I would imagine at some point, the powers that be will either replicate the formula worldwide, or make the UK show available on streaming somewhere, and probably for some insane amount of money. Yes, will happily share my results with you. I'm in the middle of making my bangle (I have revised my ambitions from the set of 3 down to 1. And it's been a real learning curve... particularly for my tiny butane torch, but I'm going to plough on today! Thankfully I had the foresight to work in copper instead of silver...) Looking forward to your blog post! And thank you for including me in your post on Thursday Sami x
