While annealing one of my bronze pendents to make another run through the rolling mill, I boo-booed, while distracted. My torch started melting the piece. So, I says to meself, lets see where this goes, and kept the torch on it longer-too much longer in the extreme. Just to see the result. Then I patina'd it with liver of sulfur to get a good black, then buffed back the highlights-not to a polished finish though. Scale about 1.75" long. Now trying to think like young person-possibly a bit of a Goth, I am thinking this could be pretty knarly. I thinking about a set of pendent and earrings as I explore this theme. So, this is my first submittal in this section, kind of scary, eh. But let me have it! Also, if I run with it, I could use some name suggestions, for this theme. Brad Side A? Side B?

Oh, that's very cool, Brad! One of the things I love about making jewelry is experimenting and turning potential disasters into a new design or technique. You've certainly done that here and I'm so glad you didn't toss the work in disgust, but kept on going instead. I'll look forward to seeing what else you create as you explore this avenue further. As far as a name goes, the first thing I thought of when I saw it is a medieval weapon/ax, so perhaps something along those lines? Dawn

Dawn offers: "As far as a name goes, the first thing I thought of when I saw it is a medieval weapon/ax, so perhaps something along those lines?"
That gets me to thinking...I watch too many of kind of movies, I must admit. Brad

My thought was a weapon as well. However, I did not think just along the lines of the Middle Age, but apocalyptic or fantasy. An orc weapon, for example. I seem to remember that orc weapons were described as crude in LOTR and this piece looks kind of crude. The patina fits perfectly. I don't know, but I prefer side B. What I would do, though, is work on the different tips, so no one can hurt themselves on them.

I did grind down those points from what were skin piercing sharp to more dull sweater snagging ends. Thank you, for your comments. brad

Cat says: " I don't know, but I prefer side B." That is another cool thing about this. It could be worn either side out, based on wearer's choice or mood of the day, eh. Brad

Good point (no pun intended!), Cat. I did not think about fantasy or apocalyptic weapons, but now that you mention it, I can definitely see it. I suppose we could also add futuristic to the mix. Dawn

My first thought was Mad Max, probably because it is the only apocalyptic movie I was ever forced to watch, but because it has that out of this world look, I think I like the orc idea even better.
Brad, I think you are on to something here because as you can see, it could speak to different fan groups.

Hm, maybe it's the C shape why I like side B? Like my initial?

Researching and thinking to myself... Early bronze alloys melted at between 980*C-1000*C 0r 1800*F +/-. Bronze Age 2300 bce - 700 bce. Copper Age 3200 bce - 2300 bce. Mentioned already Apocalyptic (in the future) and fantasy. Medieval tools/weapons was introduced. My background for jewelry shots lately, has been a black lacquered cigar box (with a red bird on it) for "God of Fire" fine cigars. BTW, I don't smoke cigars, but I got the box of 20.00 cigars as a gift. By now I have re-gifted all the sticks, and kept the box.

The box was the best part of that gift, Brad! Not to hijack your thread, but a couple of years ago, I came across a small gallery in Sausalito, CA. The owner was a photographer who used cigar boxes in his work. After somehow putting his images in and on the boxes, he applied several coats of lacquer to the inside and outside of the box. The end results were gorgeous. I could not resist this one; it now resides in my living room. And, now...back to the thread. Dawn

I like thread drift and hi-jacks. Besides, it takes a long time to learn forum posting etiquette. Especially, when to drift a bit, and when to create a new thread. I have seen it all on cooking and music forums. ;-) brad

We do too, Brad. As we are not so many, it's usually very easy to find the way back to the thread That's a gorgeous box, Dawn! I'm so intrigued by perfectly done lacquer work. Have you ever seen how Japanese lacquerware is made? If you interested, here's one of my favorite Japanology Plus episodes www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/ondemand/video/2032236/Brad, I did think what a great background you had for this pieces. The red and the letters enhanced the fantasy feel for me. I would never have thought of a cigar box, though. My friend's father smoked cigars and she kept all the boxes (actually I still have one of them) to keep different things in them. They were all wood, though.

Yep, I have been using my God of Fire wooden cigar box with the red and black and red pseudo-lacquering for pics and putting work in progress items in it. In the banjo world folks make box banjos out of sturdy made cigar boxes. Brad

I have an online friend, a musician and woodworker, who made a cigar box lyre.
