Both is beautiful. Isn't moissanite mostly lab-created because the real thing is so rare? So it's really a matter of what you prefer or rather what you think your fiancee prefers. An engagement ring doesn't have to be diamond or moissanite at all, though. Perfect is what fits the person. I know a lot of ladies who aren't partial to diamonds at all, but rather have something colorful, unique, even one of a kind, for example custom made.

With the history of diamond mining being what it is, perhaps a moissanite would be the way to go. Only an expert can tell the difference between the two. Cat makes a good point. Perhaps, you might consider a ruby, sapphire, emerald or something along those lines. After all, Princess Kate seems quite happy with her sapphire ring. It's the same one that Princess Diana once wore. Dawn

I am only a geologist, but not a "gemologist." The simulant diamond products are getting better all the time. If important to you, also more ethical, according to many. The lab created moissanite is nearly as hard, nearly a clear, and even more brilliant than diamond due to its double-refractive property. And of course so much less expensive. IMHO, I would choose the ring together. Your fiance may choose size over a much smaller diamond. I would look at the gem's brilliance and color, more than just size alone. I remember (decades ago) having reservations about buying my wife's first/only pearl necklace. The shop owner convinced me to go with "cultured" pearls for a variety of reasons-including cost. Now I think nothing negative at all about cultured pearls...other than they fell out of fashion. Ladies, are pearls back in fashion? Brad

Brad, pearls as such are still in fashion if combined with other stones and they have come back in more modern designs than the classic strung one strand or more pearl necklaces (which I still think are pure elegance). The new designs are often called "not your grandmother's pearls". I'm not sure they know some of the grandmothers today when saying that

Choosing between a diamond and a moissanite for an engagement ring is a matter of personal preference and budget. Both are popular choices for engagement rings, and each has its own unique characteristics.
Diamonds are the traditional choice for engagement rings and are known for their brilliance and durability. They are graded on the 4Cs - carat weight, cut, clarity, and color - and the higher the grade, the more valuable the diamond. Diamonds are also a timeless symbol of love and commitment, and many people prefer them for their sentimental value.
Moissanites, on the other hand, are a relatively new alternative to diamonds. They are a type of lab-grown gemstone that is made from silicon carbide. Moissanites are also highly refractive and have a brilliant sparkle similar to diamonds. They are typically less expensive than diamonds, but they can still be a durable and stunning choice for an engagement ring.
Ultimately, the decision between a diamond and a moissanite comes down to personal preference and budget. Diamonds may be the more traditional choice, but moissanites can be a great alternative for those who want a similar look at a more affordable price.
