Okay, this may not be exactly jewelry related but backing up photos in the "cloud" or using on-line services seems to be a hotly debated discussion. Do any of you do this? Here's a link to Digital Photography School's site and an explanation of pros and cons. digital-photography-school.com/cloud-storage-why-an-external-hard-drive-is-not-enoughI ask because while I always back up some (bad word, some) I don't tend to back up jewelry photos. I use PhotoBucket and have used Flickr but is that enough?

You should back up everything. I don't do it often enough myself. I just saw an article about the cloud not being safe, either. Besides I'm not a fan of clouds because I hate ours at work

I have been thinking about this too, because I have the QuickBooks files for my family, my husband's business and a client's business only on my laptop. I do back up the QB files onto a flash drive after every session. I have an external hard drive which is supposed to back up every Sunday night but doesn't, so I only back up when I think of it. Last time was last week. I have decided that I need to find a service online; I'd like one that will also back up the software. On my list to research.
Cat, when you say the cloud is not safe, do you mean that you might lose data, or do you mean security-wise?

Security-wise. We all know that security has been, ehem, a big subject lately. For example it depends on where the service you use has their servers because that defines the legal aspects. In a test I read none of the services got the highest marks. That's why in the end they recommended USB sticks or external hard drives for data you want to keep for yourself.

Yes, but then you have to worry about keeping a copy off-site, in case of flood or fire damage to your home. Maybe we have to do both to be safe.

I'm kinda of redundant redundant. I have my pics in Photobucket, my computer HD and I email them to my yahoo account as well as have them on a few CDs and an external drive. Too much maybe...but many of you remember when one of my computers took that dirt hamster nap and I DON'T want to have to go through that again.
Did I mention I'm redundant.

One problem I read about off-line storage with any storage service: what if they go broke and shut down? Do you get your images/files back? My insurance agent said to take pics of your furnishing and such and email them to yourself in case of any disaster or damages to the house. This made sense after reading the DPS article about the author losing both his hard drive and back up at the same time; probably wouldn't happen again in a million years to him but apparently it happened to one responder to the article.

I use google - picasa to store my photo's, also have a 2TG where all my files go. When my site is (finally) done all my photo's go into a gallery there so they will be on my hosts server too. Photo's taken with my smartphone go to dropbox or to a picasa-dropbox. Emailing them to myself isn't a bad idea.

I recently bought an external drive to store my photos (including jewellery, BT and BC files). I'd started backing them onto discs but it was getting ridiculous! In the process of doing that I have lost (read as yet t be found) some really nice photos of my two and my niece! I don't back up on cloud at all.

Not too fond of the cloud for back up. I just don't trust it yet. My photography instructor is a professional for over 25 years and he has about 7 backups of all his stuff. That's a lot of stuff. He has lots of external hard drives. I don't know the extent of it really but all yu really need to know is "once it's gone you can't it back." Take appropriate steps to back up your precious photos. I have 3 back ups just of my photogrphy pics I've accumulated for the past 4 months and only 1 for all my other photos. It's scary.

I am still a bit old school when it comes to family/holiday pics as I do like real photos in albums that I can look at. So for me it is a case of getting them printed and put in an album with a back up disc of the pics as well as a pc file with them. As for my jewellery pics I have them on Fb and flicker and on an external hard drive.

I just tonight backed up my computer on a flash drive. Have had it for months - don't ask me why it took so long to get to it! Aside from that, most of my photos are on photo bucket and my email is on external sites like hotmail and gmail. My biggest concern is losing my documents and all of my bookmarks if there was a crash. After the back up that was done tonight, my documents are safe. How does one save their bookmarks? Thinking that they aren't included in a system back-up. My biggest pet peeve about computers is all the maintenance that's necessary. I just want to turn them on and have them work with no big hassles! Instead, we have to worry about back-ups, hackers, virus protection, mal-ware, ad blockers and so on. It's endless! Dawn

;D When you want a computer that you describe you want a MAC. You only need to back-up (Time Machine does that all for you every night) and an ad-blocker.

My mac is set up to automatically back up. I also have an external HD for extra security.
Joe has a ton of photos on flickr just in case.
Carina, what ad-blocker do you use on your mac.
