This week's Oldies but Goodies Theme Challenge is FOUND OBJECTS (2 because we did this in 2017 before). By the way, do you know where that term comes from and how making them into art began and when? Go through your stash and post a picture in this thread that pertains to the theme. It can be something you made yesterday or something you made five years ago. We encourage you to post as many items as you want. Can't make it much simpler. We hope to see a lot of creative pics of your FOUND OBJECTS jewelry or non-jewelry. I decided to leave the thread here in "Jewelry" as it has always been here and would be hard to split up We'd love to have more members participate in this easy, fun challenge. Won't you join us? The Oldies but Goodies Challenges will last two weeks, so you have enough time to share your items! To make it easier, the end date is in the subject now.

I had to look it up… “ A found object is a natural or man-made object, or fragment of an object, that is found (or sometimes bought) by an artist and kept because of some intrinsic interest the artist sees in it.”

Sitting in my office, decided to look in my stuff. I decided to post pics of an “art”ifact that I artistically/craftily created into my idea of the tool. While in the hinterlands on a job (on private land) I found a rock that appeared out of place, for the geology/geography around me. I took the rock home along with a piece of broken hoe. The rock appeared to have been carved to strap onto a handle, perhaps a weapon? I soaked some rawhide strips I had, selected some studs from my leather craft supplies, and put a torch to the handle. In the end of the handle I inlayed the buffalo side of an Indian head nickel. An homage to the original natives of the Western Midwest. (And in one pic I had show off the traveling office desk of my family’s business , when came west from W. Virginia) Brad

Channelling your inner caveman, are you, Brad? Very cool. It reminded me of a Donald Duck comic book that I have. I thought this thread needed some bumping up, I had even forgotten that I wanted to comment! So here are some of my found objects, shells and coins (an old Deutsche Mark and two "coins" from Ankh-Morpork aka Discworld merchandise)

I had hopes of making some jewelry with it. Alas, I never found any! :-( Brad

Thank you, Brad and Irith! Irith, you know how much I love both seaglass and coins and you chose some beautiful pieces! (Even if my favorite is not among them, that gorgeous seaglass "wave" ring.)

You are all putting me to shame! Brad, very cool hammer. I love that you were able to understand what that rock might have been and reconstruct it. Also? Your desk is amazing! I love it. Cat, the shell and the coin jewelry is so pretty! I have some shells - purchased on a whim. Now you’ve given me more possibilities! Irith, I am so envious that you were able to find actual sea glass. The jewelry you made with them is so pretty. I love the coin jewelry as well. So I’ll have to say “inspired by” found objects. I found a stainless washer, and expressed to Dan that I intended that I intended to make jewelry with it. He bought me a box of different sized copper washers. Ooh! So here is as close as I can get: And my roll top desk bead work space (because I’d admired Brad’s desk): I love this desk because I can close it and hide the mess.

Great entries, Michelle! "Found" doesn't mean actively found in this context, so you are right on with your pieces Copper washers are so versatile. The copper rings I used for my last two octopus pieces are used in cars. I was glad to find such a big size. I'm looking forward to seeing you play with the shells. The earrings have a backing like bead embroidery, by the way, because it made beading the bezel easier, and I also had a big shell pendant. I thought I'd also share this bracelet that you have seen before as it was part of an Art Elements challenge. In this case the base is a loomed band, but you could also use fabric (hint hint) for a base.

Thank you all for your kind words.
There is the green sea glass I find on the beach, and all my relatives, who know I collect it, are always happy to contribute to my collection after their strolls along the beach. But then there is the Aqua, Pink and Red sea glass which I received after I tried to buy it. Whole packages they sent me in 2008. I tried to pay for it, but for some mysterious reason, my payment was rejected by the sellers, even after I tried again, and so I have boxes full of them for free!!
Cat, which "wave" ring are you referring to? Perhaps the shell ring? It was sold, but I will try to look for it.
Your beads shell pearls and sea glass bangle are very special and I love it.
Michelle,

Michelle, your stainless washer jewelry is beautiful and not putting you to shame at all. On the contrary!
