Michelle - thanks! If you have a good pattern for a granny square, please let me know! I start to get a bit bored with granny squares after a while and I have at least 9 to go for the kids' badges!!! Cat - thanks for the tips! Yes, I'm just using a cheap crochet needle. Off the top of my head I'm using a 2mm needle, which is the smallest one I had. I did a crocheted chain in a round a little while ago, which makes a great necklace, but used a solder pick, which seemed to give me more control than the crochet needle. What do you mean by British wire? Irith - those earrings are stunning!

By good needle I didn't necessarily mean an expensive one, just one that seems to be made for your hand. I had never known how differently they can feel. Maybe it also has to do with the way I hold my needle, though. When my ex-MIL saw me crocheting for the first time, she told me I did it wrong because I don't hold it like a pen, but all my fingers around the needle. I am pretty sure that's the way I learned it in school and when I tried the pen thing, it didn't work at all for me.
For me 2 mm is rather big, a smaller hook goes through the stitches more easily. My favorite sizes are between 1.3 and 1.65 mm. I would go smaller sometimes, but the hook heads bend and break off rather quickly because the wire is so tough on them. I think it's personal reference, use what feels good to you.
I meant a British company, Scientific Wire Company.
