Trying to keep my beads organized is driving me crazy. I get them all put away, then take out some for a project, and some others I “might” use. Project gets done, and I think I “might” use some of these on my next project, so I leave a lot of them out. Then pull out more for the new project. Wash, rinse, repeat. And then I’ve got a mess. I guess the answer is to put ALL of them away EVERY time. But if anyone has any tips, I’d love to hear them.

No tips from me, sorry. I'm not very organized. I have drawer boxes for Delicas, Miyuki seed beads, other kinds of beads, cabs, lampwork, but that doesn't mean that if I don't put them away right away they are not all over the place.

So organization comes from never using them. LOL! Same.

I have a whole collection of beads. They are more or less organized which is easy - I hardly ever use them. That's a waste!

Ah well, I’m going to have to resign myself to the clutter. 😄

I can't even organize myself enough to order the right beads. I start a project and find that I don't have enough beads of that color. I'm about to make my third bead order in a month, so I can finish the May/June challenge and one of Francie doll's accessories! *eyeroll*

I have tons of drawers in my studio and in them are the flat clear plastic organizer boxes in various sizes (never buy enough and never can find the same size the next time I need more LOL) I divide the drawers into metal, glass, semi-precious, seed, flower:shell:leaf, etc. When I am working on a piece I place everything needed for it on a tray. I have lots of trays and made a tray file from an old set of shelves that I added extra sliders to so I can slide several trays into them. so my beads go from the drawers onto the trays for the piece. I love this as I can carry the tray into the living room if I am working while I watch tv and everything stays in place on that tray. Sometimes I have several trays full each with their own beads so they can get a bit disorganized but I find this method does keep them somewhat organized. Oh also if I am working on a collection I will take one of my plastic organizer boxes and fill it with all the different beads I will be using for all of those pieces. That way they are all in one place and I only need to get out the one box. After I finish the collection I put those beads back in their original places.

LOL! Cat. Laughing with commiseration as I totally understand that.
Your method sounds fantastic, Diane! It’s the self-discipline to put them all back after a project is done that is a big part of my downfall. I’m working on it.....

OH you guys, don't be fooled. My studio is usually a nightmare to navigate. if I didn't do this I would be lost in there and never found!

My beads are kept in plastic zip lock bags in a couple of big plastic bins. When I finish a project, I toss all of the beads I didn't use into a bowl the sits on my workbench. When the bowl is full, I make several bead soup pieces and lots of earrings until the bowl is almost empty and then I go back to filling it again. Lather, rinse repeat. Diane, your method does sound really organized and a great way to keep track of your beads! Dawn

Dawn, I like the whimsy of tossing your unused beads into a bowl and then creating something from them.

Dawn, I like the whimsy of tossing your unused beads into a bowl and then creating something from them. I like the idea, but it wouldn't work for what I do. There would be too many mixes of seed beads and bigger beads. I would end up with a huge bowl and start to pick out beads again Michelle, I got myself two of these small storage boxes now which hold 64 of the little containers each. With the ripped up pieces, I have a lot of leftovers, often just a few beads, but my problem have never been long strands of big beads, anyway. Big beads are hard to use in wire crochet, so I have a lot of small ones, stone, crystals, pearls etc. So although these containers are small - they are meant for nail art stuff - I hope to fit quite a bit into them which will give me space in my stash drawers for the beads that won't fit. If I like it, I may even get more of those boxes.

Ooh! I like this idea! Where did you purchase them? I’m moving towards smaller beads myself. I think bead embroidery is now my thing!

I found them on German eBay. Try "nail art storage box" on eBay or maybe Amazon, I haven't checked there. They come in different sizes. Der Dekan helped me to start sorting beads. He loved the sound of beads dropping into the little containers, but he was a little worn out from his vet appointment, so I could actually get something done Like I had expected, I can't put many 8 or 10 mm beads in there, so I'll put those on strings or wires for storage, but they are great for crystals, my small pearls and other beads.
