That a is great find, not a broche person either so I think I would turn it into a pendant too.
Why don't you try to wrap a bail around the pin on the backside.

That's a good idea, Carina. I'm going to experiment a bit and see what I can come up with. Dawn

The beads are fabulous and the brooch is gorgeous. Much envy here.

Thank you, Caroline! I just got lucky and was in the right place at the right time. I'm getting to know the guy who owns the shop well enough that when I go in there he shows me the "special box" which is under the counter and contains things he's picked out before putting his finds on display in the shop. I worked on a bail for the brooch today and am pretty happy with the end result. It's funny, but this bail design woke me up this morning. Here is the necklace which I haven't taken off since finishing: I wrapped a piece of 20g wire around another piece of wire that was 16g until I'd wrapped about half the length of the pinback. Then I made a double loop using a large nail as a mandrel and continued wrapping until I had a coil the full length of the pin. I was able to slide this over the pin on the back of the brooch. The very end of the pin stuck out past the clasp and I poked my finger on it, so I cut a rubber ear wire nut in half and slid that on the end - problem solved and it fits on there snugly. And, the entire bail and cord slides off the pin if one wanted to wear it as a brooch. Ta Da! This development has kind of opened my eyes to the possibilities of brooches as pendants. Although, one would have to keep in mind that some of them are top heavy due to the placement of the pinback and might want to flop forward. Another problem to solve... Dawn

Beautiful brooch and very clever bail to make it a pendant. I think it is brilliant that the bail is removable and the brooch can be worn as a brooch or a pendant.

Thank you, Michele! I like that it can slide off too; it makes it possible to not alter a possibly valuable brooch, while still allowing it to serve a double purpose. It's kinda bugging me that those first two wraps are wonky though! Dawn

Dawn What a great solution, I would not have come up with doing it this way. Big thumps up!! For the heavier broches you can, when they have a solid back (not open worked broches) make 1 or 2 bigger flat loops under or next to the bail loops, so it keeps the broche pushed up.

I always fix wonky loops with my crimping pliers, when you are careful you can correct the loops and keep them round.

Thank you, Carina. Those are great suggestions and I'm going to file them away for future projects. I might be making more of these brooch pendants! Dawn
