Our garbage disposal started making the most horrible grinding noises before it completely kicked the bucket the other night. It was 20 years old, so we figured it had worn out. Hubby replaced it with a new one today and what do you suppose he found in the old one? Yep, a piece of stainless steel shot from my tumbler. Guess I'll have to keep it away from the kitchen sink in the future. It's really not my fault that the stuff wants to roll into every possible place if it gets loose. Dawn

Nope, no diamonds. I wish! Cat, he started to give me a lecture, but I reminded him that he's done some dumb stuff in the past too. So, he growled at me, but seems to be over it now. Besides, I'm getting payback. I had to take all the stuff out from under the sink so that he could get to the disposal and today I get to sort through it all, put back what belongs under the sink and find another place for the stuff that does not. It's always something.....
We don't have a garbage disposal. We're on septic and it's not recommended that you use a disposal with it, even though a lot of people do. The tank just fills up faster.
Many years ago, my grandmother went fishing in our disposal for something that had fallen in. There was a switch on the side of it which activated the blades. I won't go any further, except to say that she was eventually okay and still had her fingers.

We're on septic too, Gayle. I'm very careful not to overload it, but I do use it on a daily basis. So far, so good except for that tiny little piece of shot! Ouch for your grandmother - glad her fingers were ok in the end. My late FIL was an electrical contractor and in order to turn on his disposal one had to touch two wires together and, of course, the wire were near the kitchen sink where there water was often running - yikes! I constantly use the disposal. Since our new house has septic tanks, I guess I need to curb my use. Dawn, I keep a strainer on my disposal like this one, to keep unintended stuff from going in it. If you got 20 years out of your disposal, you got your money's worth.

I keep a similar thingy on my drain openings in my sink. Keeps the riffraff from getting through.

I'm on septic, too. I have the strainers on my sinks, but hubby keeps taking them out. He is not on board with the whole keep it out of the tank thing.

I've also read more than once not to put egg shells in septic system. Michele, the septic will handle most things, it's just that the more you put in to the septic, the more often you have to have it pumped out, as Gayle said. I don't put bulky things like vegetable peelings in it or any kind of meat, but no problem for other stuff. I'll have to look into a strainer, although the piece of shot was so small, I don't think a strainer would have caught it. Dawn

I strain my shot into a mesh colander. That way, it doesn't slip into the sink.

Gayle, I strained it too, but one of the little devils must have bounced out. From now on I think I'll strain it outside over a large bowl. I still can't believe something so small caused so much trouble! Dawn

I dropped a PMC toggle once, while putting it into the tumbler with some other components. I know it didn't go into the sink. In fact, it has never been found.
