It's been several months since I was commissioned to design a pendant/necklace out of a horse's tooth. You can read about it here: Horse ToothA veterinarian pulled the horse's tooth because it was giving him trouble and I was asked by the horse's human mother to make a pendant using the tooth. This involved soaking the tooth in peroxide and scraping away the remaining gum tissue. After the tooth was clean, I polished it with my dremel and it was looking really good. The project was put on hold while waiting for another designer to make a copper tag imprinted with the horse's brand. Many months later, the tag never arrived and I went ahead and finished the pendant without the tag. And, here it is - ta da! Overall, I'm pretty pleased with it and hope the human horse mom likes it as a memento of her horse kid. Thanks for looking! Dawn

I know the horse mom will love it. I remember that tooth before you did your magic on it. It was not a pretty sight. You created a wonderful keepsake that she will treasure. Great job and design.

You did an excellent job on this. No more icky, but seriously beautiful. I'm sure she will love it!

Thank you so much, Michele, Carina and Cat! This one was definitely a challenge because of the "ick" factor. It took me forever to decide on a design once I realized we weren't going to get the copper tag. My first inclination was to put the tooth pendant on a simple chain, but the lady this is for wears big, bold jewelry. That is the reason I added the hammered circle and the ornate chain; I didn't want the additions to overpower the tooth and I don't think these do. I'll let you know how it's received by the horse mom! Dawn

Nice job, Dawn! I like everything about it and I like the fact that it doesn't scream "HORSE TOOTH"!!! It looks like a fascinating piece of jewelry about which someone would ask "what's the dangly bit?" and be surprised and intrigued by the answer.

Thanks, Gayle! The way you've described your reaction is just what I'm hoping people will think when they see the necklace, but I didn't realize it until reading your post! The horse mom left a message on my phone today saying, and I quote, "love, love, love the necklace - it's exactly what I wanted!" That made me feel good. Dawn

Woah, Nellie! That sure is a purty piece! Your piece looks just right; doesn't need any tag at all. Actually I wouldn't have recognized it as that grungy tooth from a while back. No wonder she loves it.

What an original idea! As Michele said - you did magic on it! I am so happy this horse is not suffering anymore... and what a great human mother he has!

Dawn I remember that special order. It came out wonderfully well. I love it and it's no surprise the client does too. You did it more than justice.

Thank you so much Sue, Irith and Jeanne! I can't begin to tell all of you how much I appreciate these wonderful comments on something that started out as such an iffy project! Irith, the horse is much happier without that tooth. It bothered him so much that he couldn't eat before it was pulled. Dawn

Look for vampire teeth, I'm sure they'd fly off the shelves!
