I took a gold and silver plating workshop last week end and you would be amazed at how easy it is. The only thing is that it is an expensive set up. The solution for gold runs about $380.00 and then you need a cathode of pure gold. Imagine that! Then you need a rectifier.
If you want to plate copper it must be sealed with a plating of nickel. You then plate over the nickle with either silver of gold. I could not believe how simple it was but is it EXPENSIVE.

That sounds like a cool thing to be able to do. Expensive, but cool!

You also need good ventilation - the process is toxic. There are plans online for building your own recitifier, if you're handy, or have a friend/relative who is handy. I like the idea of plating gold over silver - I think once you get to 4 microns thickness you can call it vermeil.

If you are doing any plating....CLEAN,CLEAN,CLEAN. And make sure you rinse well between processes. Good plating takes a lot of practice, but the rewards can be worth it. Personally, I hate plating...Smithy

Must be why vermeil is so expensive.... but at least it's much more affordable than gold. My thought is, if the gold wears off, that sterling silver is still against my skin instead of a base metal.
