Is it possible to get full hard copper and brass wire? I have a project that requires full hard 18 ga and I want to make some in copper in brass before moving to sterling silver. All I've found is half-hard and soft. If full hard is available where can I buy it?
you can get 1/16" brass rod that is full hard from your local welding supply. Just ask for bare brass brazing rod. It may be called bronze, but it is really a brass alloy that is 58% copper and most of the remaining zinc. If you anneal it and let it air cool (don't quench in water) then it is closer to half hard and is easier to form cold. I think this size is closer to 16ga, but it is somewhere close by and has the advantage of being very slow to tarnish. For hard copper I use the wire rollers on the rolling mill and take down wire 2 gauges to make it hard.
