I made a few years ago, but decided to re-learn making the two-slipknot cord necklaces, these are usable practice results. I will wait to make more as needed, in case I need to string the cord through a ring or something before choosing lengths and making the knots. These are black and brown, 2mm, cords, the knots are triple wrapped knots, then after trimming ends, I took a Sharpie and dabbed the ends. Work in Progress, because now I just need the piece of jewelry to use them on. (pics at my messy office drafting table) Brad

I have no doubt that there will be the right piece of jewelry on each one of those very soon!

I see beautiful pendants in the future of these cord necklaces. Very clever to start with the necklace first.

Its like buying beads or metals with nothing in mind...but the guilt of spending the money-and not making something. It motivates me when I think I am not in the mood. But sit me at my bench and I get interested. Brad

Very nice practice pieces, Brad. As the old saying goes, "practice makes perfect" and it really does. I'll be looking forward to seeing the jewelry you make to put on the cords. So true about motivational inventory, although I've never thought of it in that term before. Usually, it's just called "the stash" and I cast guilty looks at it now and then. Your desk isn't messy. Every good designer has a desk that looks like several works in progress are all going on at the same time! *looks at messy workbench in shame* Dawn

I don't have a messy desk! I just have a lot of very messy drawers and boxes!

Really interesting article, Cat. Somehow I bounce between the two. When I am at the start of a brand new project, I clean up the dregs of the last project, then start cluttering it up with beads and other supplies for the new project. My workspace is a small roll top desk that I can close when my mind needs a rest. If I have to look at the mess, then I am distracted and irritated. Neat: Messy:

I tend to take beads out of their drawers/boxes (Delicas and seed beads live in separate quarters) and then after working on something, I throw all the tubes into the box on my bed (aka my studio) and then it's my challenge to make something for which I only use those colors Sorry, Brad, we really took a detour with this thread now!

Well, Brad said he likes thread drift. Thread drift he has! I tend to like order and organization in all aspects of my life. One of the things on my "to do" list today is to deal with paperwork and tidy up my computer desk. However, I'm not compulsively neat either. In my studio, I like to start each new project with neat and organized surroundings, knowing that as I work, the space around me is slowly going to devolve into a sort of chaos. There are a couple of things I do without fail to prevent having my space look like that of Keely Sorette's which is pictured in the second photo of the article Cat linked. There is no way I could work in the space; it is completely out of control. The two things I do are to tidy up my studio at the end of each working session whether I've completed the current project or not. That doesn't mean I do an all out clean up, but I put my tools, beads, components, etc away and organize the stuff on my workbench so that the next time I enter my studio it is ready to work in. The second thing is that after I complete a project I do a much more thorough tidying of the studio including putting everything back in it's place, wiping off of surfaces and emptying the trash can. By doing this, I find that I start each new project with a clean slate so to speak, both in my physical space and in my mind. I find that quite comforting and satisfying. Now, while I'm working, things can get very messy with stuff on every horizontal surface and sometimes piled up on the floor. I want my stuff out where I can see it when I'm working and having it all scattered around often leads to new ideas. The trick when a new idea hits is to make a note of it rather than allow myself to become distracted, drop what I'm doing and start working on something new. Michelle, that desk is brilliant. Putting the roll top down is sort of like closing the door to a messy room and I can see where that would come in very handy when a quick clean-up is needed or when you just don't want to look at the mess for whatever reason. Dawn, you and I will never share a studio. We would drive one another nuts, nuts, nuts *dancing around the thread throwing beads in the air*

HaHa! They say that opposites attract! You make me think of sharing a hotel room with my sister. There were three of us, so my friend took one bed and my sister and I shared the other. We chose not to have housekeeping service for our two day stay. In the mornings, I got up and made my side of the bed while my sister left here unmade with the covers all rumpled and every which way. In the bathroom, all of my toiletries and makeup were neatly put away in my toiletry bag when I finished getting ready in the morning and my towel was hung neatly over the towel rack. My sister's side of the sink/vanity had her toiletries scattered all about and her towel was slung haphazardly over the top of the shower curtain rod. It looked like the room was used by Jekyl and Hyde! Dawn
